Take a look at what I've been reading. You should check them out too!
For my SSR book, I am reading, The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger. This book takes readers through the time leading up to the tragic deaths of six fisherman on the Andrea Gail in October 1991. The fishing boat was in the middle of ten story waves and 120 mile and hour winds. The book talks a lot about the relationship between the fisherman and their wives or girlfriends and how hard it is to let go of the life they love so dearly. The only life they have ever known.
I loved this book because it was a true story. Sometimes we need to read touching novels because they really make you appreciate your life and make you want to be a better person. My thoughts go out to all the loved ones of those who have been killed at sea.

The second book I read for SSR was Safe Haven, by Nicholas Sparks. The story of Katie and Alex takes place in small beach town. Katie is running from her abusive, alcoholic husband and Alex is trying to raise his two children after his wife passes. The two fall in love and end up saving each other.
I have seen most of the movie adaptions of all of Sparks' books, but I liked this book much better than the movie. Katie is a very strong character which made me relate to her. Alex is a widower struggling to take care of his family and is everything a man should be. Their love story was sweet and was overall a pretty good read.

My third SSR book was a James Patterson novel titled, Witch & Wizard. Wisty and Wit Allgood are brother and sister and are thrust into a distopia world, ruled by The One. At first the two have no idea they are a witch and wizard, but when they are captured by New Order soldiers, they soon discover they are. Together they try to escape prison and rescue their parents with the help of other kids and teenagers who are also "gifted."
Witch & Wizard is a very easy book to read and is quite and interesting new series. I like how teenagers are the center of the book and how they are the key to restoring their world. Wisty and Wit each have very unique characterization which makes the story much more interesting - every character is fun and quirky.

After reading Witch & Wizard, i decided to continue on with the series and read the second book, The Gift. This book takes off where Witch & Wizard ended. A dear friend and ally was murdered by The One who was pretending to be Wisty. The One is angry and is hunting down the brother and sister like a mad man. Wisty has a powerful gift The One needs in order to become the most powerful being in the world.
The second book in the series was a fun, quick read. Both books have ended with cliff hangers, so now I want to continue reading the rest of the series. Wisty and Wit had better character development and the book was very suspenseful and thrilling.

My last SSR book is The Freedom Writer's Diary, by The Freedom Writers with Erin Gruwell. This book is a collection of diary entries from erin Gruwell's English students. The LA students were considered to have no hope because of their gang affiliations, rough attitudes, and bad home lives. But, Erin Gruwell decided to help these young freshman and give them the voice they never had the opportunity to use.
I absolutely love this book and would recommend it to everyone. The stories of abuse, neglect, drive by's, death, and endless disappointment are heart-wrenching. I can't believe that kids only fourteen years old are in gangs and have watched friends and family get shot and stabbed. The fear these kids have to face is unimaginable and I am so honored to have read their entires. I feel like there is still hope for the human race and that anything is possible after reading this book.
